How to do Valentine’s Day at the Mountain Grocer

Let’s be honest, Valentine’s Day is a holiday that we all dread, single or taken, am I right?! The pressures of the perfect date night and gift are all too much to handle. Have no fear—we’ve done the dirty research and compiled a complete kit for a romantic evening at home, courtesy of the Mountain Grocer, which is open daily and located next to the South Ridge Lodge. Best known for their great made-to-order sandwiches, huge on-mountain beer and wine selection and all odds and ends you forgot to pack for your trip to Sunday River, the Grocer also has great gifts, a well-stocked pantry and amazing desserts.

Gift giving doesn’t have to be about the roses and chocolates.  While the Grocer does sell candy, they also have unique gifts like natural locally made soaps, ceramic wine chillers and Sunday River trail signs. My top gift from the Grocer is a set of etched Sunday River glassware. Whether you and your S.O. are winos, brew fanatics, or you prefer your libations on the rocks, they have the glass set you need. Why not open two locks with one key? Give this gift as soon as you walk in the door and you can enjoy it all evening with your beverage of choice during a night in.

Speaking of bevies, the Grocer has over 30 different wine and prosecco brands, and a large selection of craft beers. My go-to wine is the Honig Sauvignon Blanc or Cabernet, both Sunday River favorites, heck our logos even on the label! Bubbly brews more your style? Try the Baxter Stowaway IPA or Shipyard’s Prelude, a winter classic.

A romantic date night at home isn’t complete without food. As a lover of snacks, I was impressed with how many appetizer options I could find. From your standard cheese and crackers to fancy dips and salsas, the Grocer has something for everyone’s pallet.  I suggest a jar of the Spicy Corn Relish with tortilla chips, or the Spinach and Artichoke Dip Mix with dipping pretzels or Asiago cheese crackers, all from Stonewall Kitchen.

Now for the main course; Pasta! If you’ve always wanted your own Lady and the Tramp moment, opt for the spaghetti with Portland’s own Micucci Vodka Sauce. If you’re looking for something a little less romantic, or you’re more of a carnivore, grab a pack of fully cooked Baby Back Ribs, all you have to do is toss them in the oven to warm up.

Finish the evening with a sweet for your sweetie. I’d go with the giant whoopie pie (literally, its 32 ounces!) or a slice of lemon berry mascarpone cake. If you really want to pull out all the stops to impress your S.O., they’ve got all the fixin’s for chocolate cake or double chocolate brownies. My mouth is watering!

Whether you forgot that the day for love is coming up or you’re just plum out of ideas, the Mountain Grocer’s got you covered!
