No trip to Sunday River is complete without a visit to Camp, located in the Grand Summit Hotel. The cozy, rustic interior, complemented with comfort food galore, is reminiscent of days spent with family and friends in a hideaway tucked deep in the woods. You know, without all of the mosquitoes.
While we can totally get behind noshing the Lobster Sandwich for lunch and the Pecan Crusted Rainbow Trout at dinner time, it’s the tasty breakfast offerings that leave you full and satisfied to start your day. Open daily at 7AM, Camp is your ultimate on-mountain breakfast destination.
“Breakfast at Camp plays off of the idea that you’re escaping daily life when you dine with us. We do all of the work for you and that makes waking up so much more enjoyable,” says Grand Summit Hotel Food and Beverage Director Brian Simpson.
Let’s start with the basics. After being seated, you’ll be offered a generous pour of caffeine supplied by Coffee By Design out of Portland, Maine. Depending on the day of the week or the nature of your stay, you’ll be given a breakfast menu or pointed toward a hearty buffet. You’ll then eat to your stomach’s content, and be on your merry way to an adventure, be it with the L.L.Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools or the Mountain Park.
“Marie makes our pastries and breakfast breads from scratch daily, Shelly prepares the specials, and Frank is always there at our eggs-to-order station, creating omelets and scrambled eggs just the way you want them,” describes Simpson.
For the a la carte options, we’re big fans of the Chef’s Benedict of the Day, which has been known to flaunt Maine’s finest crustacean beneath a thick layer of Hollandaise sauce, and the Bird’s Nest, two eggs sunny side up on a bed of shredded potatoes with your choice of bacon or sausage and toast.
As for the buffet, you can dash all your preconceived notions of rubbery eggs and soggy muffins, and consider this a feast fit for a king—even a gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian king. Get your fill of sweet potato hash from a cast iron skillet, fresh pastries and fruit, or pile a bagel high with cream cheese and lox. Your options are, to our standards, practically endless.
