Reasons to Ski this December

For some, the early season is the best season. If you have never joined us prior to the holiday season, you are missing out friends. December is one of the best months of the year both on and off the slopes.

Besides some of the best early season conditions we have seen in years, we have a few other reasons you should be hitting the slopes this December. Here is a quick rundown of just a few of those reasons.

1.) Events

There is one event in particular that stands out as a real sign of the start of the winter season. That event is Winterfest Weekend. Winterfest is a special time around here. Not only is it Sunday River’s birthday (we are turning 58 this year FYI), but it also features some of our favorite events like the torchlight parade, fireworks, a Hanukkah Party at the Peak Lodge and the start of night skiing! To celebrate our birthday at this year’s Bash, Wild Adriatic will be jamming out in the Foggy Goggle all night long.

We can’t talk about December on the slopes without talking about Christmas. It is, after all, our favorite time of the year (at least ours here at Team Snow).  We have huge lineup of events going on throughout Christmas and New Year’s Vacation Week including apres entertainment, Peak Dinners with Eddy the Yeti, fireworks, Black Diamond events as well as night skiing and tubing all week long.

2.) Ticket Discounts

Everyone loves a deal. December is full of them. Not only do we have one of the best early season ticket price to open skiable terrain ratios in New England (simply put, the most “bang for your buck”) but we also have some wicked deals going all month long.

This year, season ticket holders can bring a friend for $49 through December 22nd. Everyone likes hitting the slopes with friends. Don’t have any friends? Maybe you can use this as an icebreaker.

Don’t forget, you can save on lift tickets all winter long by booking online in advance.

3.) Expanding Terrain

Another perk of skiing in December is the possibility of getting first tracks of the season on some of your favorite trails. When we say first tracks, we mean “first person to hit it this season” kind of first tracks.

Our snowmakers are constantly putting down the blankets of white across ever-expanding terrain all month. The weeks leading up to Christmas usually see our largest terrain spikes of the year. Remember, the early bird gets the worm (or in this case the fresh cord).

4.) Lighter Traffic

Skiing with friends and family is what it is all about but sometimes, we all need a little “me time”. Like having trails to yourself? Who doesn’t. The early season (especially mid-week) is the perfect time for catching some morning laps all by your lonesome.

Look at that blanket canvas… it is calling your name. Carve away friends.

5.) Lodging Deals

If we haven’t convinced you to join us this December yet, maybe some lodging deals will be just what does it for you.

Staying on the mountain, enjoying a warm comfortable bed and rolling out right onto the slopes is what its all about. If you have never stayed slopeside, first off, you are missing out; secondly, check out some of our killer deals this month… December is your chance.

Lodging packages at the Grand Summit Hotel, Snow Cap Inn and Jordan Hotel are available through the holiday season and all winter long.

See you on the slopes!
