Local Eats: Pietree Orchards’ Goodies in the Mountain Grocer

Here at Sunday River, we have some relatively unknown secrets. If you’ve never been to the Mountain Grocer, that’s a mistake in itself (their sandwiches are to die for), but keep your eyes open for the homemade baked goods from Pietree Orchards.

Not only are these goodies delicious but hail from the apple trees of the King family – that’s right the Maine-living, murder-loving, story-telling, mystery-making King family.

Pietree Orchard was first established by the McSherry family more than seventy-five years ago. The farm was then purchased by the King family in 2007. The orchard and farm now grows apples, strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, peaches, plums, European and Asian pears, and a large selection of vegetables.

If you’re game to venture out, the orchard is only 40 minutes away from the slopes and offers pick-you-own fruit all through spring, summer, and fall. This may be the perfect summer activity, plus who doesn’t want some classic Maine blueberries?
